They knocked down walls, opened the ceiling, pushed out into the garden

Curves, triangles, and staggered ceiling heights add drama to the remodeled kitchen, dining, and family rooms in this ranch house. The owners gained the airy multipurpose living space by removing several walls between cramped rooms, opening up the ceiling to the roof peak, and expanding 8 feet into the garden.

Each of the 15 stations is architecturally different; most are open and airy. Stops include Expo's main gate (Main Street) and the fair's Canada Place.Descended from two generations of Spiritualists, my father was always noncommittal. He had run across plenty of frauds and exaggerations, but, even at its best, the Society for Psychical Research seemed only able to draw blanks. Under close scrutiny, psychics failed because they were "having a bad day" or because their powers were impeded by the presence of skeptics. Modern parapsychologists excuse the "nonrepeatability" of their experiments with much the same rationale.

The designer was Richard Elmore of Palo Alto, California.
