What Can Solar Lighting Do For Me?

We are all looking for ways to cut cost as the price of living continues to rise. And, with the recent push to more green power sources, we look for ways to do our part in saving the environment. One of the best ways to accomplish both of these aspects is to switch to solar power. There are so many different ways to implement the renewable source in our daily lives, and with a few simple questions, you can find the right one for you.

Perhaps you have a dock, and are always worried that something will cause your light to malfunction. What can you do? Consider installing a solar light. These illumination devices are available as track lighting along the edge of the dock or as pillars that can also serve as mooring. They are reliable even if the power goes out. What can you do for outdoor lighting at your home? There are numerous styles and designs for home outdoor lighting needs in sun powered options. You can find cute little pathway lights to illuminate the walk to your door. You can choose decorative lighting for your gazebo or patio. And, you can even install solar powered security lights to make dark corners of your yard feel safer. With outdoor lighting the options are endless. And, installing these solar systems will save you both money and time. Are all of those warning lights and traffic notifiers using up electricity? In most cases, these lights, like speed indicators, school zone lights and flashing warning lights do depend on electricity. The good news is that more and more localities are switching to solar power for these signs too. Again, this is a great money saver and another step toward green living.Have you always wondered about parking lots and street lamps and the power they use? They are needed, but they seem so unreliable, going out at the worst moment. Are there more reliable options? Solar powered lamps for these cases are more than reliable. They are each self contained, meaning that, if one was to malfunction, and the others will continue to glow brightly. The cost of installation of such a lighting system will pay itself off in a matter of months, since the lights use no electricity and need little or no maintenance. It seems like those city bus stops must use a lot of energy with those lights, but you wouldn't feel safe without some sort of illumination. Are there any other options? Yes! In fact, there are a whole line of lighting systems that depend on solar power. And, some of these systems offer this neat little motion detector, so when a passenger steps under the shelter, the light automatically comes on. These systems could save a city thousands of dollars in electrical bills. As you can see, there are so many excellent solar powered lighting options. These seven above are just a few of the many uses for these lighting systems. For anyone looking to save a great deal of money on power bills or for those looking for green power options, then a solar light system is definitely a great choice. You will not be dissatisfied, and you will love the drop in your electric bill.

The Uses of Track Lighting

Track lighting is used primarily as display lighting. It is ideal for the places that need continuous sharp lighting throughout the room. It provides excellent lighting and can be used to highlight clothes in a shop, paintings in an art gallery of displays in schools. Track lighting can be run from both mains and low voltage options too so it doesn't cost a huge amount to run. There are a large number of scenarios in which track lighting would be used which will be highlighted here in the article.

Track lighting can be run in any direction or used in any combination so even very odd shaped rooms can benefit from it. In a museum there are often displays on the walls. Track lighting can be situated in front of the display with the actual lights pointing onto it. Visitors to the museum then get constant and sharp lighting throughout their journey and are able to view the displays, pictures or other props being used. Art galleries benefit from track lighting too for this reason. The track lighting can be used as very effective lighting for each and every painting or picture displayed on the walls. To appreciate each painting it needs its very own light (or several depending on its size) and track lighting enables just that. There are many reasons to use track lighting as these examples show. Most public buildings can benefit too and it is especially good in places with very high ceilings where ceiling lighting just won't work. It can light paths, be used to highlight displays or products and is very versatile and easy to fit. When you are looking to purchase good value track lighting you should visit your nearest lighting wholesalers where you will find the best prices. Whether it is floodlights for the school pitch you are looking for or track lighting for a display, buying from a reputable lighting wholesalers is the best move to make.Museums are a good example of where display or track lighting would most definitely be needed. There is often a very distinct path through a museum which people are to follow. Above this path track lighting can be used to light the way. Museums are often housed in very large buildings. This is especially true of museums such as the Natural History Museum (how else would a dinosaur fit in?) When the ceiling is very tall it is not possible to have traditional ceiling lights because these would have little effect. Instead it is important to use lighting that is attached to the ceiling by long poles. In other words the lights are situated at a much more useful and appropriate height. Track lighting can be used in this way which also makes it ideal for museums and large buildings with high ceilings.

Open-and-shut laundry and sewing room

Open-and-shut laundry and sewing room

Capitalizing on an open second-story hallway, this tiny (7- by 8-foot) laundry and sewing room seems anything but claustrophobic. Sliding cabinet-type doors on three tracks open to let air and light in through a 4 1/2- by 8-foot "window'--or close to conceal work in progress. At each end of the joint shop, pillars support overhead department signs, and display presentations with graphics-- such as "Pastel Essentials" in juniors--key the customers to the latest trends. Here, merchandise is taken to the ceiling with face-outs. All of the upper display merchandise is also located at customer accessible levels, and according to Herbruger, the stock is changed frequently. In the area, rock music blares, lights are more subdued and an invisible line divides the categories, which share a common register area. The Model T doesn't live here any more. Fold back the faded blue doors on this World War I-era shed-roofed garage, and instead of a horseless carriage you see a well-organized home office.

Photo: Opened, the room is ready for everything--from stains to repairs. Towel bar above sink can hold wet drip-dry clothesThese "shops" do indeed accomplish what the Hayward, Calif.-based retailer desired of its new prototype--the appearance of a group of specialty stores under one roof. (See DSN, Dec. 14, 1987.)Within the racetrack, the store's length--instead of width--is now bisected, and this center path winds through the newly created "Young World" shop, which houses young men's and juniors together.Photo: Weathered exterior of old garage gives no hint of high-powered transformation that took place insideIn home fashions, Mervyn's again used trend centers and the pillar support of overhead signage to indicate the shop entrances. While the design left domestics similar to the past, housewares is vastly different with the use of European-inspired white fixtures with pastel accents. Some product is taken to the ceiling and the entire area is tiled.Much of the new store has been well received by customers and company alike, but Herbruger said she expects the retailer will make some alterations with its prototype, such as allowing the floor-to-ceiling sweats in men's and women's to be displayed only above a given height. The display of men's denim may also have to change, as in its present location in young men's, many regular men's customers can't find it, she added.

Mervyn's Prototype Reflects New Image with 'Trend Shops'

Mervyn's new shoe shop uses low-profile white fixtures. The plan provides space for displaying shoes on the top of the fixture at eye level, with the stock stacked below. The wall-hugging, wraparound desk is made of hollow-core doors supported by filing cabinets. Above the desk, a shelf of predrilled 2-by-8s slips over 3/4-inch threaded steel rods set into holes drilled in the wall studs.Photo: With sliders closed, second-floor laundry room is hidden from hallway, and from two-story living room and entry hall belowPhoto: L-shaped work area runs around two walls of converted garage. Narrow shelf above desk holds supplies out of the wayWhile the manager said inventory levels are not necessarily higher to accommodate the face-outs, she did say other Mervyn's may feature shorter face-outs, with the depth effect still maintained. He added plywood wainscoting around two sides of the room; it acts as a sort of corset to stiffen the walls. For additional reinforcement, he designed a simple truss: 2-by-3 rafters run from wall brackets made of 2-by-6s sandwiched between angled cutouts of 1/4-inch plywood. He covered walls and ceiling with gypsum board and added track lights overhead. Pastel and white paint brightens the 12- by 20-foot space.Although Mervyn's maintained its racetrack layout, the track has been moved out to where it new bisects several of the outer departments. So instead of a deep department, where merchandise in the back might get lost, the aisle now splits the area, putting more merchandise closer to the customer and creating the individual "shops."Customers were first introduced to the new prototype late last year, and initial response to the changes has been favorable, said store director Doreen Herbruger.Above the white tiled aisles, Mervyn's has dropped the ceiling, which Herbruger said she believes the company will not do in future remodels. Other stores, she said, will pick up some of the best features of the Dublin prototype and incorporate them into their stores.New Shoe DepartmentOne step into the new Mervyn's prototype here and it's clear the promotional soft goods retailer has abandoned its stodgy image. The updated look may also help bolster the 199-store chain's sales, which have been lackluster in recent quarters. Mervyn's, division of Dayton Hudson, is a highly promotional soft goods retailer which competes vigorously with many discount stores for apparel and home goods sales.Although the rotation of wall display merchandise is labor intensive, Mervyn's new prototype has managed some labor savings in its new shoe department. Larger--with space, Herbruger said, taken from lingerie--the department is now self-service, except for a register area.Supplementing natural light from the window are recessed down lights, fluorescent lamps above a perimeter soffit, and track lighting over the work table.Photo: Bold as bolts of cartoon lightning, jagged plywood brackets were cut on a jigsaw following cardboard patternsThe garage needed repair anyway, so when architect Glenn Lym decided to remodel it as a temporary office, he put extra structural support into his design.Photo: Mervyn's, Dublin, Calif.

Charlotte's ventures into Manhattan frontier

Charlotte's ventures into Manhattan frontier

Avoiding the cliches of Mexican and Tex-Mex food, Rothman's menu offers grilled chicken breast with pineapple served with salsa and beurre blanc; grilled fajitas with pico de gallo, guacamole, and flour tortillas; bay scallops and leek enchilada with chipotle tomato sauce; and other similarly unexpected entrees.Appletizers include chilled cream of avocado soup, grilled roulades of prime beef, and flautas--corn tortillas wrapped around chicken and fried. Rothman will also offer five daily specials and a South of the Border Bouillabaisse every Friday."I feel it in my bones," she declared. "in a year this will be the leading restaurant in New York City." Schaeffer forecasted $100,000-a-week sales after the first year."This is probably the only Mexican restaurant in New York with a pizza oven." Rothman said.Mexican pizzas are available with a choice of toppings: mesquite grilled onions, pickled jalapenon, roasted garlic, red salsa, black refried beans, and chorizos.Charlotte's Cafe, her 150-seat, $1 million showplace specializing in Soutwestern food, has joined the nearby Gulf Coast, Sunset Strip, and Pasta Pot casual restaurants in staking a claim on the West Village waterfront.Chef Rothman, a Southern California native, made some changes in the kitchen which was designed and constructed before she was hired. She removed several stoves (the kitchen had too many, she said), ordered the pizza oven, had a walk-in installed where a service bar was inconveniently located, and changed the straight-line dishwasher area to a more efficient horseshoe shape.West Street used to be in the shadows of the elevated West Side Highway, which was removed, along with some old waterfront warehouses, a few years ago. The city is considering building a new superhighway and parks on West Street from nearby Battery Park City to midtown.Charlotte's Cafe's waterfront neighbors are drawing customers from outside the area--crucial for any restaurant in the still-desolate area.La Grand Corniche, an expensive tablecloth restaurant a few doors from Charlotte's, closed last year, and the small hotel in which it was situated has been converted to Bailey House, a group home for AIDS sufferers. With its pale green, pink, and black decor in an airy multi-level dining room filled with track lights, cacti, and ficus trees, Charlotte's Cafe is the most upscale of the lot, a beautifully appointed tablecloth restaurant that anticipates an influx of young professionals drawn by the neighbrohood's new apartments and shops. The restaurant's projected $30-a-person average ticket is high for the West Village but moderate for New York.Construction activitiesNEW YORK -- Charlotte Schaeffer is the latest urban pioneer to open a culinary outpost in a restaurant-deprived neighborhood of Manhattan--in this case, lower Christopher Street near West Street and the Hudson River.Despite the gentrification process that has already begun, the neighborhood retains its seedy characteristics, including numerous drug peddlers and their customers. It is also several blocks from the hearts of Greenwich Village. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant occupies a multi-level space on the ground floor of a new apartment building. Schaeffer said she has the room to add another 50 or seo seats in the main dining room. The entire West Village waterfront area, however, is bustling with construction crews erecting apartment houses and converting older buildings to cooperative apartments.Cindy Rothman, former sous chef at Safari Grill and supervising chef at Cafe Marimba, has assembled a menu for Charlotte's Cafe that she described as basic American food seasoned with Mexican herbs and spices. "With Mexican food it's sometimes hard to have a finedining experienceM so I'm combining only the best of Mexican technique and product," she explained a week before the restaurant opened.Dinner entrees are priced from $11.95 to $19.95. Rothman said she is developing a special light-foods menu for the bar are and the sidewalk cafe, which will open in warmer weather. Charlotee's Cafe has a Saturday and Sunday brunch and will begin serving weekday lunch in April.Sunset Strip at West and Horatio streets opened last May and offers an electric menu (chili, tacos, snails with garlic in cream sauce with puff pastry, fried chicken, grilled fish, barbecued ribs, and stir-fried foods) in a whimsically garish setting. Next door, the Pasta Pot features moderately priced Italian food and live jazz.On weekends tourists and shoppers from the suburbs crowd the neighborhood's streets. Among the renovation projects--the conversion of the huge, old Federal Archives Building to rental apartments a block away from Charlotte's Cafe. Schaeffer said the construction activity bodoes well for herlatest venture.Schaeffer, who also owns the Campus Coffee Shop on West Fourth Street near New York University and Charlotte's Island Gourmet Deli in Jensen Beach, Fla., is bluntly optimistic about her new venture.Gulf Coast is a popular Text-Mex restaurant on the corner of West 12th and West streets that recently opened an upstairs room to accommodate its nightly crowds.

A striker is also still yearned for in these parts too, preferably one with a bit of proven class.Follow us on: Facebook - Twitter - LinkedInAs "I am Coming Home Newcastle" blasted out of the visiting dressing room after the derby win, it must have been hard for Sunderland officials to stomach.Add to Digg Bookmark with del.icio.us Add to NewsvineThankfully for Toon fans, Londoner Pardew managed it quite well with his post-game thoughts on understanding the significance of the fixture reflected during 90 minutes of pulsating action.Seeing off Sunderland felt as great as ever as Geordies worldwide partied hard into the wee small hours. While substitute Dan Gosling could easily have been wheeling away celebrating his first Toon goal after squandering a decent chance near the end.Chained with the frustrating events of the transfer window this summer, it would have made life tough for United and Alan Pardew - instead, the manager and his team can use it to kickstart the season ahead and build on it.Yet a succession of Lee Cattermole late tackles went unpunished and the ex-Boro man could easily have been down the tunnel too.Simply getting by will not be enough in the bigger tests which lie ahead. All in all, three points could not have been more welcome for United and, with two clean sheets from two, Pardew has something to build on.Yes, defeat on Wearside would have been unthinkable for the Magpies.A bigger scoreline would have been even sweeter for Geordie fans, but this will do very nicely indeed.Yet this was the rough and tumble of a derby, not that should have excused Bardsley later. With limited funds at his disposal, Pardew cannot seemingly buy his way out of trouble because the people above him do not want to pay over the odds in the transfer window due to the current financial bounds they have imposed upon themselves. The control and poise Pardew has spoken about this summer was there for large parts of the match. In truth, it was desperate from Brucie's boys in the end - summed up when Bardsley's potential leg-breaker on Coloccini resulted in a deserved red card in one of Webb's few correct decisions.IIR is tracking an estimated $5.8 billion in transmission and substation upgrades under way or set to kick off in the next five years. Increased U.S. Generating Capacity Leads to Transmission Upgrades, an Industrial Info News Alert

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Proposed transmission lines are usually given the green light, as companies show that service areas are growing and that brownouts and blackouts could become commonplace without additional transmission capacity. As new plants come online, particularly wind and solar power plants , the nation's power transmission infrastructure is beginning to show its age and could be unable to cope with coming influx of power.

Sure, United's stars - roared on by home-grown players such as Steven Taylor and Shola Ameobi - fully understood the occasion and the consequences of defeat.Their frustration was understandable, given the fact Bruce has shelled out this summer but cannot seem to find the missing ingredients in a derby contest.Unlike the Arsenal game, Newcastle threatened more with Barton denied by Larsson's handball and seeing another effort chalked off for offside.Referee Howard Webb missed the incident in a blunder which could have had severe implications on the season ahead for Newcastle.Webb and his fellow officials melted amid the intense derby atmosphere.

Cheer Up Your Home With Lights

Your home lighting is one of the most important features, just as critical as the color of the paints and the style of the furnishings. Lighting creates moods- not only the mood of the room, but also the mood of the occupants. When it comes to lightings, one size does not fit all, so its best to customize the lightings to the tasks performed in the room and the atmosphere you want to create.

Just like the kind of light used, the style of the light fixtures also creates ambiance. Think about the light purpose: should it blend into the decor? Create an intimate or romantic mood? Or simply provide bright, general purpose illumination? Whatever the need, there's a fixture designed just for that purpose.FLOOR OR TABLE LAMPS:To brighten your mood and your house consider improving your home lighting. As proven by number of studies, notably in regains with extremely abbreviated daylights, light can make big difference in how we feel. So think about adding lamps and light fixtures to brighten dark areas and gloomy spirits. And, whaen natural light is available, flood your home with it.This kind of fixtures uses spot light attached to the metal track, which is attached to the ceiling. Because the individual lights can be repositioned, track lighting works well for the rooms used for the several purposes. For work rooms, the lights can be positioned towards specific work station, such as a sewing machine or table work.TYPES OF LIGHTS FIXTURESThese cone shaped fixtures provide subtle, decorative light, and are ideal for bedrooms. Dining rooms and bathrooms, or anywhere you want soft and intimate lightings. Because they are small and attach to the wall, they work well in cramped rooms which can't accommodate table or floor lamps. Placing sconces in the corners add light, without making the room too bright.Lamps work best for specific purpose, reading, working, and lighting up a specific area of a room. They may provide enough light for a small room, but probably wont de adequate for the larger room; in this case, you'll need several lamps. However, they are ideal foe accent lighting, and can brighten up dark corners in rooms with only a single overhead fixture. And, because they're easily moved they provide flexibility.WALL SCONCES:

To brighten your mood and your house consider improving your home lighting. As proven by number of studies, notably in regains with extremely abbreviated daylights, light can make big difference in how we feel. So think about adding lamps and light fixtures to brighten dark areas and gloomy spirits. And, whaen natural light is available, flood your home with it.

Filene's Basement dresses up look of future stores

DANVERS, Mass.--Federated's off-price outfit, Filene's Basement, will replace its nofrill look with high-tech drama as the chain gears up to expand into new markets this year.

The Dry Goods has experimented with other variations on its basic operation in recent years: trying to do without domestics and housewares in one unit and also testing an enclosed specialty shop within the main store called Signature Place, which featured higher-priced women's designer apparel. Signature Place has been dropped and in the new unit, domestics and housewares are back.Women scoured a circular rack signed I. Magnin and came away with anything from a Magnin-label polyester blouse for $20 to a Mario Valentio suede culotte tagged by Magnin at $650, price by Filene's Basement for $120.The "second-generation" stores are the 11 units that were opened from 1978 to October 1983 in suburban Massachusetts, Long Island, Queens, N.Y., and West Hartford, Conn. Those stores feature more circular racks and wall shelving for men's shirts, but have bare floors and follow a nofrill approach to presentation.Gully said The Dry Goods would open no more new stores this year and that he'd have to wait until next spring to decide which, if any, of the display changes could be used in other stores.Track lights shining on huge fashion photos, gray carpets with bold red stripes, an exposed ceiling painted gray or black, and massive signing lettered in black and red create the backdrop for bargain-hunting in the Filene's Basement stores that opened last October here and in Dedham, Mass. The upshot is an appearance little akin to that of its sister stores, while the merchandise is identical and the apparel discounting concept uncharged, Gully said.A banner running high along the outer walls of the 20,000 sq. ft. used for selling space in Danvers underscores the off-price them: "Boston's famous marketdown store. Similar signing serves as a lead-in to the store, and even more signs naming labels such as Calvin Klein, Sasson Charles Jourdan and Valentino hang from pipes over the traffic aisle. The revamped Filene's Basement stores "will serve as the vehicle to establish Federated in the off-price arena," explained New England zone manager Charles Naff, who oversees all but four of the chain's 14 units. For the year net profit declined 1.9% to $41 million on a 9.1% gain in sales to $1.424 billion.Gully does not expect the new look here in Cherry Hill to alter the standard Dry Goods dollar sales mix, which is roughly 40% in ladies', 20% in men's 20% in children's and 20% in domestics and housewares."We have to go through at least one Christmas season to see the customer reaction," he said. The third-generation stores were unveiled last October in two locations formerly occupied by Dayton Hudson's Lechmere stores. The Dry Goods opens dolled-up no.7; mix same, but most piperacks go

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- The look is everything at the newest Dry Goods unit, which opened here about two weeks ago.

The location fits neatly into the market area the chain's been developing with other units in Claymont, Elsmere and Dover, Del.; Vineland, N.J., and Northeast Philadelpia and Springfield, Pa.Filene's Basement stores offer men's, women's and children's clothing, shoes, jewelry and some home decor items including figurines, vases and frame prints. The chain promotes itself as featuring $600 famous brands."Most apparel is featured every day as 25% or 20% "Below leading department stores' regular prices." It's double ticketed with "compare at" prices. He would not divulge sales objectives for the unit other than to say that if the chain's current average of $200/sq. ft. or $16 million annual volume for the 80,000 sq. ft. of selling space here isn't exceeded, "we won't even break even."A special event is run every two weeks at which anywhere from 25% to 40% of the store is put on sale, according to Lynch.Based on a matrix prepared by a consultant, the company would also like to shift its customers base to include more families with children and to some extent older couples, noted vice president Edward Lynch. He and other chain executives do look for the new appearances to heighten the store's appeal among families with $20,000 to $45,000 annual household incomes and focus shoppers' attention on the apparel specialty areas mentioned, juniors et al, where merchandise is now segregated and classified much tighther. In the new store, ceilings are 12-ft. high instead of 15 and lighting recessed in place of the hundreds of yards of bare neon bulbs used in the last opening less than two years ago. Floors, except on the race track, are carpeted; fashion fixtures have replaced piperacks, for the most part. Fingerwalls separate and bolster the individual identities of juniors, full-figure and young men's.Industry analysts see the Cherry Hill look as fitting into a general trend among off-pricers to "clean up" in response to an increasingly promotional stance by department stores which has cut into their business in recent years. In Massachusetts, the "retail stock" assortment included private label items from the regional chain Cambridge Dry Goods in addition to national department store labels. Filene's Basement in Danvers also stocked some of its own private label goods under the Filene's name, which aren't sold in the department store division. A Filene's long sleeve woman's cotton shirt was tagged at $8.99.The newest Dry Goods anchors an $8 million center Fashion Square, at the intersection of Brace and Haddonfield-Berlin Roads. About 15 other small retail outlets will be tenants, Gully said.In expanding in 1984 and future years, management at Filene's Basement will move more heavily into "retail stocks" to help widen the gap between its assortment and the offerings of its off-price competitors, Naff explained. The Dry Goods is today heavily promotion oriented, a tack executives said they've had to adopt in recent years in response to department stores' more frequent ads. "They don't sell anything except on sale," Gully commented, "so we have to have sales, too, to beat them."His aim, he noted, is to keep average gross margins for the store at the chainwide 30% mark.Gully bills The Dry Goods as "not an off-pricer as much as a fashion discount store.""Ninety-nine per centk of our buying is direct," he said and buyers try to avoid lines and items where lack of continuity might be a problem.Other sources report that The Dry Goods, with projected 1985 sales approaching $110 million, has been a dull bottomline performerl with only marginal profitability last year and a loss in 1983.The SCOA Industries subsidiary spent $1.3 million in fixturing its seventh off-price apparel unit, according to president Richard Gully. In addition to a stronger emphasis on department store closeouts, the prototype stores will add a 55-ft. assortment of Ambassador greeting cards. The two newest units were slated to begin the test phase of the card program in December and continue into 1984 with an off-holiday assortment. All cards and wrap will be discounted 30% off the listed price at checkouts.Once fine-tuned, the new look will become the prototype for all future Filene's Basement stores, said mel Johan, senior vp and director of the division. The 14-unit chain, which added four stores in 1983, has more aggressive expansion plans for 1984 including pushing into new markets, he added.

The location fits neatly into the market area the chain's been developing with other units in Claymont, Elsmere and Dover, Del.; Vineland, N.J., and Northeast Philadelpia and Springfield, Pa.

They knocked down walls, opened the ceiling, pushed out into the garden

Curves, triangles, and staggered ceiling heights add drama to the remodeled kitchen, dining, and family rooms in this ranch house. The owners gained the airy multipurpose living space by removing several walls between cramped rooms, opening up the ceiling to the roof peak, and expanding 8 feet into the garden.

Each of the 15 stations is architecturally different; most are open and airy. Stops include Expo's main gate (Main Street) and the fair's Canada Place.Descended from two generations of Spiritualists, my father was always noncommittal. He had run across plenty of frauds and exaggerations, but, even at its best, the Society for Psychical Research seemed only able to draw blanks. Under close scrutiny, psychics failed because they were "having a bad day" or because their powers were impeded by the presence of skeptics. Modern parapsychologists excuse the "nonrepeatability" of their experiments with much the same rationale.

The designer was Richard Elmore of Palo Alto, California.

The glass gable forming the upper portion of the window wall accentuates the room's lofty height and lets in a flood of daylight. Opposite the couch in the family area, a curving alcove echoes the contour of the kitchen counter and the wall and soffit above it.On the other hand, you might expect John Taylor, a physicist the New Scientist called one of the top 20 scientists in the world, to be suspicious of psychics who attempted to avoid his close scrutiny. Yet his 1975 book Superminds enthusiastically described his experiments with "Geller children," kids who could bend forks and spoons "psychokinetically," just like uri Geller. The trouble was, they could only do it when no one was looking. Taylor even gave this aversion to scientific scrutiny a name: the "shyness effect." He accomodatingly designed "sealed" tubes with the objects to be bent placed inside, and sent them home with the children. When they returned bent the next day, still sealed in the tubes, he considered this proof of psychic abilities.Photo: Color strips mark two Expo sites, on False Creek and Burrard Inlet. Both are served by SkyTrainStation-hopping tourThe fate of Vancouver's new rapid transit, called SkyTrain, presages projects across the border. Portland's Banfield light rail is scheduled to open this fall; Seattle soon may begin construction of a downtown transit tunnel intended for buses now, light rail trains later.Taylor refused to see the magician, the Amazing Randi, who felt he could explain the shyness effect in more prosaic terms; cheating. Perhaps Taylor himself had become afraid of close scrutiny. Randi called on him anyway, disguised as a reporter, and found Taylor particularly easy to fool. In his book The Truth About Uri Geller, Randi describes having no trouble at all opening and closing the crudely sealed tubes in Taylor's presence, even managing to bend an aluminum bar while Taylor was momentarily distracted, scratch on it "Bent by Randi," and replace it among Taylor's collection undetected! The designer was Richard Elmore of Palo Alto, California.Trains travel up to 60 mph, and stay in stations only 10 to 30 seconds. Emergency operators ride aboard each train, and station attendants answer questions and help direct passengers."You might think of it as a little BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) without drivers and with some pioneering technology,' says B.C. Transit spokesman Bob Egby.RECENTLY ON DISPLAY in bookstores throughout America was a flashy paperback entitled Somebody Else Is On the Moon. The cover depicts an astronaut coming upon huge tracks in the lunar soil and pipes sticking out of a crater. "For 200 years astronomers have suspected -- now we know!" proclaims the blurb. "Incredible proof of an alien race on the moon! The evidence: Immense mechanical rigs, some over a mile long. Lights, flares, vehicle tracks, towers, pipes, conduits."But it's appropriate that this new technology comes to Vancouver now. Its peninsular downtown, often choked by rush-hour traffic, is much in need of alternatives to the automobile. And it's no coincidence that service began on the eve of Expo 86, the world's fair opening here on May 2, devoted to advanced transportation.Photo: Heading out of hazy downtown Vancouver, two-car SkyTrain sweeps around a bend in its elevated guideway at 60 mphNew (Canadian) technology at workGft off at Broadway Station for a look at Commercial Drive, Vancouver's "Italian Street' with import shops, espresso bars, restaurants, and delis. From Main Street Station, stroll into Chinatown and its Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden. The 21-kilometer (14-mile) system provides service along the city's busiest commuter route, Kingsway (Provincial Highway 1A-99A), from suburban New Westminster southeast of Vancouver into the heart of the city.Articulated axles allow trains to corner at high speed with less wheel wear and noise. But BART cars are heavier, the guideway is sturdier, and it carries some 300,000 people a day (mass transit) versus about 100,000 for SkyTrain (intermediate). The final blow to Taylor's shyness effect occurred when an alternative team of scientists decided to replicate Taylor's findings. Six of his metal-bending prodigies were tested in a room with one observer, who noticed no cheating even though "psychokinetic" metal-bending occurred repeatedly. But a hidden camera recorded the truth about the shyness effect, as reported by the investigators in the September 4, 1975, issue of the scientific journal Nature: "A put the rod under her foot and tried to bend it; B, E, and F used two hands to bend the spoon . . . while D tried to hide his hands under a table to bend the spoon." Today, Taylor has retracted many of his 1975 claims. When my father was investigating mediums, they often claimed that the spirits would stay away if there was a skeptic in the room. So if an investigator frisked the medium for gadgets, the spirits would fail to materialize. This is a very convenient explanation for why paranormal phenomena disappear when someone looks closely, and it is invoked in many ways by New Age theorists. The Amazing Randi is strongly disliked by the modern parapsychological community, and quite unwelcome at psychic demonstrations because of this "skeptics effect." A simpler explanation for why something isn't there when you look carefully is that it isn't there at all. Beware of anyone who says you mustn't look closely.Photo: Riders queue up at Granville Station next to underground shopping malls. Trains come every 4 minutes, doors open 10 to 30 secondsThe very abundance of such claims has made the "Search," as I like to call it, more difficult than ever. This Search is a tradition in my family. My grandfather was a devout Spiritualist. He held seances with the great mediums of the day -- Arthur Ford, Eileen Garrett -- and he took my mother and father to all the main Spiritualist camps. My parents were somewhat more skeptical. My father joined the American Society for Psychical Research and became one of its directors, investigating haunted houses, poltergeists, clairvoyants, and telepaths long before such investigators were guaranteed a spot on the Merv Griffin Show. Up in the attic we still have a set of fake spirit photographs a medium tried to pass off on him; spirit photography was the popular equivalent in those days of psychics' key-bending stunts now.End to end, it's a 27-minute ride including stops, less time than it takes to drive during rush hour. Planning is already well underway to extend the route several miles into the suburbs.Somebody else Is On the Moon contains a fine example of this fear of scrutiny. All of Leonard's moon constructions are at the very limit of photo resolution. When he had a chance to get better photos and to see the same terrain more clearly, he didn't.Some of my earliest reading materials were the "psychic books" that filled my family's bookcases. In one of them, I ran across an engraving of my great-grandfather, Emerson J. MacRobert, a Spiritualist in London, Ontario. At a time when such activities were scandalous and possibly illegal, he had held seances in a top-floor room of an old house with velvet tacked over the windows. Word got out and he was nearly forced from his post on the London School Board by righteous churchgoers. In my childhood reading, I also ran across an old reference to something called a "Treborcam Ethereal Healing Machine." The name is my own spelled backwards. From Burrard Station you can walk to city center restaurants and shops, theaters, museums, galleries. Or from downtown, ride to suburban Patterson Station, get off, and stroll a section of the emerging B.C. Parkway, a landscaped 12 1/2-mile-long strip beneath the guideway. This lifetime exposure to the paranormal has left me somewhat disillusioned and impatient with the intellectual credulity of my generation's. Still, I'm ready for the day when UFO creatures land on the White House lawn and are interviewed by Dan Rather, or when one single psychic somewhere can predict the future or reliably levitate paper clips so that anyone can see it's so. In the meantime, here, culled from all the time I've spent in the Search, are some guidelines by which to evaluate the flood of paranormal claims. These guidelines, carefully applied, should help eliminate the claims that are worthless -- at least 98 percent of them -- and will provide grounds for evaluating anything that's left. The most interesting thing about Somebody Else Is On the moon, however, is not its contents. It's the publisher's marketing strategy. The book was placed in bookstores among the offerings for" New Age" readers, including those like myself who like to think that we are in the vanguard, exploring important new ideas and philosophies. There, in fact, is where all sorts of crank literature has migrated. That's where it sells.Food-preparation and eating areas are illuminated by down lights in the kitchen ceiling and in soffits over the sitting and dining areas; track lights can add more nighttime brightness. For a folder describing attractions at each stop, write to B.C. Another innovation: downtown, SkyTrain goes through an abandoned railroad tunnel, the guideway stacked into two tiers to handle trains in both directions. Both systems are electric-powered, use standard-gauge steel rails atop an elevated guideway to eliminate street crossings, and can add or drop cars as needed.Boon to commutersAbout the size of a city bus, each SkyTrain car can seat 40 passengers with standing room for another 35.Linear induction motors (LIM) have replaced conventional rotary motors. Instead of spinning a drive shaft connected to wheels to propel cars, LIMs create a magnetic field between cars and rails by alternating surges of electrical current. But the power surges are not in step, and it's this out-of-phase magnetic attraction that pulls each train down the tracks. Far less friction occurs between wheels and rails, reducing wear and maintenance.Commuters don't have to worry about missing a train; another will be along soon. Automated ticket machines accept $1 and $2 Canadian bills and all Canadian and U.S. coins except pennies, and will make change.Almost everyone with a paranormal theory to tout, I have discovered, is unwilling to scrutinize the phenomenon. Whatever the claim, chances are he won't examine it closely even when he gets an excellent chance to do so. I get the impression that, deep down, paranormal claimants are afraid they'll see there's nothing there. Because science, the art of looking carefully to determine the truth, is precisely what they're afraid of, they'll reject its ability to assess their claim, perhaps with a snide reference to the inadequacy of "linear, left-brain, Western science."SkyTrain is computer controlled, the longest fully automated system in North America. Compared to underground subways and standard railroads (heavy rail), its cars and guideway are "light,' saving construction cost. The new rapid transit offers tourists the chance to enjoy the city without traffic and parking hassles. Different Types of Glass Wall Lights

Homeowners now enjoy a wide variety of glass wall lights options for decorating their homes. Gone are the days of the simple, recessed light shells filled with moths. The modern variants are stylish, designer, eco-friendly, power saving and can be used to portray different ambience for different rooms in the same house. The primary difference between these products lies in the quality of lighting they provide.

About NewBay Media LLCDownlights: These are installed in rooms to create a feeling of space and a clutter free environment. These lights are generally installed in or above the ceiling so that they remain hidden from general view. The only visible part of the whole set is the decorative outer shell and the bulb in the center. The biggest architectural issue with these devices is to ensure that they do not fall down with the effect of gravity. They can be used to illuminate just about any space in the whole house. For information on exhibiting at Digital Video Expo, please contact Jacqueline Gospodinoff at jgospodinoff@nbmedia.com.Additional event details will be announced shortly. For complete event and registration information, please visit http://www.dvexpo.com.Glass Wall Lights: Different Types of LightingThe main purpose of lighting is, of course, to be functional and you can find an extensive variety of practical and decorative night lights for outdoor purposes which are suitable for attaching to building walls, gardens and walkways. You can also use them to make a feature of the garden lighting up paths and borders. They ensure your premises are safe to use providing a low light to see by as well as security to the premises. Most people don't understand just how many varied types of lighting options there are and the difference they can make to a setting. Each type has a different purpose and selecting the right kind can make a big difference to the overall look of a room. Fit lights around the mirror in the bathroom so you can check you look your best before leaving the house, soft lighting in the family room for comfort and warmth, and light up the bedrooms with unique table and floor lamps.Accent lighting is designed to create a particular ambience and generally focuses on a specific item or section of the room. In business environments it can be particularly effective, for example you may want to highlight a painting on the wall, light up a display of exclusive items for customers to admire, or create a certain mood that portrays glamour and class. Accent lighting can be fixed onto the wall or set into the floor where they can be angled to point upwards to highlight a specific spot. What are the Best Venues for Installing Indoor Lights? In retail premises good lighting can be used to highlight particular products and attract customers' attention. Use it to light up elegant glass items or wall displays in a shop, if you have a restaurant or bar it can generate a soft romantic feel or a vibrant atmosphere, and use it for a beautiful effect in glassware stores. Ambient Lighting: This is lighting without any extreme high or low levels. It is considered to be the general base lighting for any room. This lighting is synonymous with overhead lighting, unless uplighting or indirect lighting is specified. The walls are the preferred place of installation, although they can be combined with other types of lighting solutions to provide unique dcor. Table lamps and floors can also be used as a source for ambient lighting.

Picture Lights: These indoor lights are the source of accent lighting. Their task is to attract attention to any particular work of art. The dimensions of these picture lights are often identical to the size of the picture or wall hanging they are meant to highlight.

Digital Video Expo will also present a number of free education programs on the exhibit hall floor, on such topics as Lighting for Digital Cameras, Post Sound for Digital Content Creators, and the New LTO Tape File System.

“As one can see from the subject matter in this year’s Digital Video Expo conference program, we are presenting much of our educational content with the independent production community in mind,” said Carmel King, NewBay Media Executive Vice President. “With up-to-the-minute information on building your own studio, independent film production and post, lighting and sound, along with hands-on training, we’re ensuring that participants will be given the knowledge and tools to help them bring their creative visions to reality.”Indoor light fixtures have a clear cut advantage over their outdoor counterparts. With indoor lights, the designers can experiment with fixtures that are attached to walls. These fixtures could have simple on/off switches. Some of the glass wall lights come with the option of a dimmer attached. This way, they can be used to set the light of the room in accordance with the requirement of the situation. Accent Lighting: Imagine a situation where you have bought a particularly expensive piece of decoration and want it to be the center of attention at the next party you throw. It is in situations like this that accent lights come to the rescue. They are designed to complement the beauty of certain important objects, such as an expensive painting or even the fireplace. Such lights are even used to create a sense of separation in the same room. Typically, they are composed of spotlights, track fixtures or sconces. Picture Lights: These indoor lights are the source of accent lighting. Their task is to attract attention to any particular work of art. The dimensions of these picture lights are often identical to the size of the picture or wall hanging they are meant to highlight. There are various types of lighting, the main lights in a room are fitted into the ceiling or mounted on the walls and is necessary for safety and lighting large areas. You can add task lighting to a room to provide extra light to a certain area or section of the room. At home you may want the preparation area in the kitchen lit up to make it easier to see what you are doing, or a corner of the living room where you can sit and read, or perhaps as a feature hanging above the dining table for family dinners. In a business environment extra light will be necessary for the office desks or the reception.Generally you will need to use a combination of practical and enhancing lighting as a business has to keep its customers and staff safe whilst still making the best of its features and products. Finding appropriate lighting isn't too difficult and there is a lot of choice available both on the high street and online. Most lighting companies will offer every type of lighting appliance, from wall mounted and ceiling lights and table and desk lamps, to track lights, recessed lighting and outdoor spotlights. There are plenty of lighting companies online specialising in an extensive range of lights for homes and commercial lighting needs. The range of styles, colours and prices is huge and what you choose will depend on your budget and exactly what you want it to achieve.
