OLYMPIC legend Seb Coe will recall his track rivalry with the North East's Steve Cram when he receives an honorary degree from Sunderland University next month.
The athlete with 12 world records to his name will receive an honorary doctorate for outstanding contribution to the world of athletics and for his leadership in the 2012 London Olympics bid.
Lord Coe will receive his award from Steve Cram in his role as University Chancellor.
Leading figures from the worlds of TV, literature and business will also be honoured alongside thousands of students at the graduation awards ceremonies at the Stadium of Light. Those receiving honorary degrees include Sunderland-born TV presenter and architect George Clarke, entrepreneur and musician Paul Campbell, and Wire in the Blood author Val McDermid.
The week of ceremonies, beginning on July 11, is an opportunity for graduates to celebrate their success with family and friends.
Lord Coe is chair of the London 2012 Olympic Committee and vice-president of the International Association of Athletics, as well as a world-renowned athlete.
He won gold in the 1500m in both the Moscow Olympics in 1980 and those held in Los Angeles in 1984.
